How to hang a Woven Blanket as a Tapestry
*Our Woven Blankets ship folded. To achieve the best presentation, prep your Blanket by steaming or ironing on low temp to get any wrinkles or creases out
Hanging your new Woven Blanket seems straight-forward, but there are a few ways to go about it depending on your needs. Whether you are a home owner who can punch holes in the wall willy nilly, or are a tenant whose landlord would annihilate them for even thinking of breaking into their precious walls, we’ll help guide you in the right direction.
Push pin/ Thumbtack
The first, and most common method is to use a push pin on each corner of the blanket to attach them to the wall. The woven material allows a pin to slip in between the threads, and doesn’t damage the fabric. For a seamless look, use a pin that is the same color as the blanket. Otherwise, a metallic, or decorative pin can be used for extra flare. You can do this by yourself, but having a second person really helps.
-
Decide which wall you want to display your blanket. Measure the space if you have to, but if you have a buddy helping you can have them hold it in the desired spot.
-
Once you’ve settled on the spot, take your woven, choose one top corner to start, and pin it into the wall.
-
After the first pin is secured, take the other top corner, while using gentle force pull the blanket horizontally until it is taunt. Too tight can warp/stretch the material, too loose will create slack in the middle. Secure the blanket with your second pin.
-
You can stop here, or repeat steps 1b-1c on the bottom corners. If you decide to pin the them, make sure the blanket is taunt vertically and horizontally
Bonus: You can use this method to also hang on the ceiling. I definitely recommend help, but it is achievable with one.
Tapestry Hangers
Tapestry hangers can come with stick and peel adhesive to help avoid holes in the wall or with a screw and anchor to offer a slightly more permanent solution. This option will be visible, but there are many stylish varieties that can add to your decor. The hangers usually come as a clip, so you can easily go from displaying, to using your blanket without having to worry about relocating pin holes. This is also a great option to the Warm People tapestry collectors who want to rotate designs.
-
Lay the blanket flat, position the clips where you want them to be near each top corner, and measure the distance using a tape measurer.
-
Take that measurement and line it up with the desired placement on the wall, and use a pencil to mark the positions. Make sure it is straight and even on both sides.
-
Clean your wall (an alcohol wipe should do the trick). Attach your tapestry hangers to the wall. If it has an adhesive back, make sure it can hold at least 3 lbs of weight. Some strips recommend to wait a period of time before hanging items, so check the instructions.
-
Now that your clips are in position, take the woven and hang it with equal space on either side. Make sure the blanket is taut, so there is no slack.
*Our method of choice is to use wall tacks because it allows us to switch out woven blankets quickly as needed. I try to move them inwards away from the corners a bit to help with the corners stretching that occurs. If you want it flat against the wall, you will have to stretch it a bit to make it taut. If you end up with some waves in the fabric, it helps to brush your hand against them and push them outward. Also, if you want the tassels to be more aligned, especially at the top, you can use any sort of comb to set them in place. Although there are no mounting points in the woven blankets, we haven’t had any issues or damage to it when hanging it on a wall long term.
